The 3rd Annual Diabetes Day at UCLA

The 3rd Annual Diabetes Day at UCLA on April 28, 2016 was a day dedicated to learning about diabetes, current prevention and management research, and global statistics. We gave healthy snacks and water to our guests from our amazing sponsors. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this event a success! We hope to see you all again next year! 

2nd Annual UCLA Healthy Living with Diabetes Patient Conference

DiaBeaters enjoyed this empowering and motivating 2nd Annual Diabetes Patient Conference hosted by the UCLA Diabetes Program designed for patients with diabetes and those at risk. There were breakout discussion sessions with separate tracks for type 1 and type 2 that addressed healthy nutrition, pharmacology for type 2 diabetes, updates on insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring, and carbohydrate counting.

San Gabriel Health Fair

DiaBeaters participated in the San Gabriel Health Fair hosted by the Medical Experience through Service in Healthcare to inform residents about diabetes prevention.

World Diabetes Day at UCLA

On November 12, DiaBeaters hosted World Diabetes Day at UCLA with the help of the AGS Honor Society from Pierce College to spread diabetes awareness and educate attendess on the importance of eating breakfast and choosing drinks with less sugar. Atteendees also got to meet our DiaBeaters mascot, Samson, and help us spread awareness through conversation and social media. Thank you to the Healthy Campus Initative and Rise Bars for their support.

Heyler Harvest Festival

On October 18, DiaBeaters went to the Heyler Harvest Festival to support the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City. Julie Schatz and Wilson Williams led free community zumba encouraging people of all ages to dance and be healthy!

Downtown Women's Center - Women's Wellness Program

On October 17, 2015, DiaBeaters sat down with women to answer questions about diabetes and helped the Downtown Women's Center enroll women in their wellness program that focuses on diabetes prevention and management.

Sports Physical Fair at the UCLA Med-Peds Comprehensive Care Center

On August 22, 2015, DiaBeaters joined the UCLA Medicine Pediatrics Comprehensive Care Center to educate high school students and their families on the different types of diabetes, lowering risk for type 2 diabetes and testing their knowledge with interactive games. The event was very successful with many high school students enjoying the games while also learning about diabetes and disease prevention. We would like to thank Dr. Curcio and everyone who helped put on this educational and fun event.

David Geffen School of Medicine’s Medical-Student-Run Homeless Clinic (SRHC)

On August 12, 2015, DiaBeater’s Community Outreach Director Tamara Flores launched a new collaboration with the David Geffen School of Medicine’s Medical-Student-Run Homeless Clinic (SRHC). Tamara accompanied Geffen student and Happy Feet medical student coordinator Harman Rahal to the Santa Monica Homeless Shelter to give a presentation regarding foot conditions and diabetic neuropathy, commonly seen in the homeless community. This presentation was part of SRHC’s new educational program in which once a month students give short presentations on commonly seen health conditions to increase awareness and to encourage healthy lifestyle choices. Check our website for dates, times, and locations of upcoming presentations!
